Jochen received his MSc in chemistry in 1981, his medical doctor in 1987. Since then, he has been working as a medical doctor: In 1999 he moved from Freiburg University Medical School to Rostock University Medical Center. For many years he was the head of the 36 bed inter-disciplinary intensive care unit. He is professor for anaesthesiology and deputy director of the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. Today, he is responsible for a large number of medical and organizational issues occurring in the department. Together with Wolfram Miekisch, he started his scientific career in 1995 at Freiburg University Hospital. First clinical studies were undertaken in mechanically ventilated critically ill patients at that time. Special attention was paid to volatile organics exhaled from patients suffering from acute lung failure (ARDS). In the following years, he conceived many breath research related clinical studies in spontaneously breathing and mechanically ventilated patients. Together with the members of his working group RoMBAT (Rostock Medical Breath Analysis and Technologies) he established and optimized offline and online analytical methods for breath analysis. In addition, they extended breath analysis to large animal models and they systematically analysed volatiles emanated from cell or bacterial cultures. In the context of data analysis, RoMBATs identified special problems occurring through data overfitting and together with other breath researchers they proposed solutions for these crucial problems.Jochen has now more than 27 years’ experience in the field of breath research and is cofounder of the international society of breath research (IABR).
