Wolfram received his PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Erlangen-Nuernberg in 1998. As a Postdoc he shared Jochen Schubert´s group and the University Medicine Freiburg focusing on improved technics for non-invasive monitoring in mechanically ventilated patients. In 2000 he moved to the Rostock University Medical Center and – together with Jochen - build up the ROMBAT (Rostock Medical Breath Research Analytics and Technologies) group at the Dpt. of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care. As head of the ROMBAT Labs he is responsible for bio-analytical research (VOC identification, real time monitoring, origins an behavior of VOCs in vitro, animal models, patient) and technical development (sampling and pre-concentration techniques and devices, real time monitoring at the bedside, PoC sensors) involving pre-clinical and/or clinical breathomics (exercise, metabolic diseases, lung failure, heart disease, viral and bacterial infections, lung recruitment…). He contributed to the state-of-the-art in breath research with > 90 publications. From 2019-21 he has served as chairperson of the IABR and since 2016 as (co)leader of the IABR task force for sampling and standardization.
