Research leader at the Department of Medical Sciences; Respiratory, Allergy and Sleep Research, Uppsala University, Sweden. After a predoctoral position at the Anesthesia Research Laboratory, University of California, USA, she obtained a PhD position at the Uppsala University in 1991, where she defended her thesis “Bronchial reactivity in rabbits and humans -modulation with nitric oxide and hypertonic saline” in 1994 and became professor in 2006.
Her research field is respiratory physiology, with a special interest in the production of nitric oxide. After an early stage spent to perform in-vitro studies and in-vivo experiments in rabbits, pigs and horses, in the last 20 years her research has focused on human lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, both in Sweden and in Nepal, and more recently on sports medicine (airway epithelium). Since the discovery of the flow dependency of exhaled nitric oxide breath concentration by her research team, she has served on ATS and ERS task forces and is now serving on five ERS taskforces for exhaled nitric oxide.
