Makoto Sawano M.D. Ph.D. is a Japanese, a surgeon, a teacher, and above all, a breath researcher. As a surgeon he is the director of Advanced Centre for Emergency Medicine and Critical Care at Saitama Medical Centre Hospital. As a teacher, he is Chair and Professor of Acute Medicine at Saitama Medical University, Professor of Health and Life Science at Chubu University, and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Tokyo Medical School. His research interest includes haemodynamic monitoring via breath analysis, medical application of stable isotope (13C) based breath tests (both formal and non-formal), and exploring non-volatiles (sugar, nucleotides, etc) in exhaled breath condensate (EBC). In recent years, he has been deeply involved in the development of novel diagnostics for Covid -19 via EBC and in promoting Covid -19-related breath studies as a guest editor of the JBR Covid -19 Focus Issue with Jonathan Beauchamp.
